Head Gasket - Update

Well I got the head off my 94 cse. It was very difficult to break the head free. I had two people rocking and yanking full force for about an hour until it finally poped loose. At first I was very discouraged by the appearance of the surfaces. Both are very rough and stained. The edges of the coolant channels on the block and head were both very rough and disformed. I took a razor blade lightly to both surfaces and removed most of the ugliness that turned out to be left over gasket material. The valves faces were all white and chalky, I assume this is from burning coolant. Pistons are all black, exhaust valves are all black. I will post pictures as soon as I fix my digital camera (projects, projects).
I'm wondering if I can lightly sand the head with 600 or so to smooth it out otherwise I would have to take the head to my friends machine shop in Seattle, (long process).
