if you jack up BOTH sides of the car. The control arms will then be hanging about as low as possible.
Like Jimbo, I also did not use a pickle fork. After removing the pinch bolt on top of the ball joint, I pried the gap open a little bit, which made removal quite easy. If you need to pry the old balljoint a bit, there is a slight overhang on the steering knuckle - do not pry against the rubber CV joint boot!
