I took the inlet manifold off as I did not want to fiddle about with the removing fuel rail and injectors. Inlet manifold bolts are tricky to get at, I used a 1/4 inch socket drive plus extensions coming in from various angles not just from above to reach the lower bolts and then used one of those flexible tubes with the magnet on the end to remove them. I left the exhaust manifold on until I got it out of the car with the head, then removed the bolts (soak well in releasing fluid before hand) and installed a new gasket later, on reassembly. I got my wife to hold the timing chain and feed it hand over hand to be sure that it did not fall in when I lifted the head off. Getting the sprocket bolts was not fun on mine. I had to whack the spanner to break the seal while my wife held the camshaft on the flat section to prevent it turning...she ended up on her backside more than once during the process! If the head or block has any signs of pitting use JB Weld to fill in then carefully sand. Get all the mating surfaces cleaned up before reassembly and make sure you torque the head bolts exactly as the manual specifies. Good luck!
