did you do the compression check with the coolant cap in place? The system will hold pressure with the cap on, but as a rule of thumb, the only way for air to get in your tank is from the engine...has to be higher pressure air that the coolant pressure for that to happen. If your coolant system leaks anywhere else you will leak coolant externally.

I just had a situation where my cyl head was perforated and the engine passed the compression check. The hole was small enough that the leak only showed on a full leakdown test. Me and the mechanic were baffled when we removed the head because the gasket was intact. The hole in the head was the size of a pin. the symptoms were similar to what you are seeing. I think the hole started many years ago when I broke my timing chain and smashed 7 valves in the process. Nobody noticed the head damage at that time, but I cant think of what else would have caused it.

Either way, it sounds like you will be pulling your head off to fix the problem.
