I'm in the process of doing a set now, as my rotors are shot at 40k miles. You need a lathe, a drill press, a mig welder and a die grinder.
The mounting bracket is a bit more difficult. Abbott starts with the Viggen bracket and machines off the mounting ears. Then they weld on a plate with tapped mounting holes that line up with the holes in the Saab spindle. No adapter, which is pretty slick.
Bought new the rotors are $200 per pair and the calipers $650 per pair. That doesn't count the mounting brackets and the adapters for the brake lines. As you say, about $1000 in parts.
Shipping and all I paid about $1300 for the Abbott kit when the US dollar was still strong. Given all the machining and welding, a pretty reasonable price.
