Well, I agree with you too, that a Saab can be a great hobby. I love having things to keep my mind going, and a car worth understanding, and tinkering on is a great way.
I must argue that any car can be a hobby. . . and that any car could be not-a-hobby. I say this because giving someone a 9000 who doesn't want a hobby will not make them a better member of society. . . it just might drive them nuts; and it might not.
If you have never seen a Honda which is a hobby car, you must not drive near any highschools. . . we all know that hondas are popular to be modified (Among other brands)
Have you ever wondered if the hobby makes people more socially funcional, or if it is simply that someone who has a more "healthy" outlook on life will automatically find a hobby because it is more engrained in them to be active and inquisitive? I think that some of these studies are kinda like putting the cart before the horse.
I couldn't agree more that Saabs are great hobby cars. My experience with my parents' '92 9000S is that it has been so trouble free for the last 10 years and 130K (We got it when I was going to highschool) that it wouldn't have qualified as a hobby car without some owner-intiated tinkering. My parent's hobbies don't lie in the garage, and the Saabs they've owned have treated them well.
My first car ('89 BMW325iS) was a hobbie car. New shocks, stereo, did all the maintenance myself. etc. awesome car. My new-to-me 9000 Aero is a hobbie car right now, because I'm going through it to make sure it's up to my standard under the hood and elsewhere.
Working on your own car is surely satisfying, and working on a great car (Saabs) makes it all the more so.
Keep hobbyin'!
~Peter
