AC repairs didn't succeed Posted by Peter [Email] (#2804) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Peter) on Thu, 6 May 2004 20:48:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I did (almost)everything by the book! I am a pretty competent home mechanic and have fixed and recharged AC before but this repair and conversion to R134a has me stumped.
When I got the car a while ago there was no Freon in it. I did the research, got new auto AC guages, ester oil, new receiver/dryer, expansion valve and o-rings. I flushed the system, blew it out, 2 days later added the oil and pulled a vacuum for 40 mins. Then I added 2 lbs of R134a. The compressor won't kick in, pressure switch on rcvr/dryer seems okay. There is no 12V going to the compressor clutch.I jumped 12V to the compressor to get it to circulate and the compressor seems to pump but no cold felt on the big low-side pipe. I think there may be too many unknowns, such as the compressor.
One problem: the guage set has big fittings on the connections to the compressor ports - so I can't have both connected at the same time! They are too close on the Sanden compressor. That way I can't really diagnose pressure problems. (One port fitting may need to go on an extension).
The refrigerant is in there but not circulating; the system seems to be sealed; it held a vacuum. I have let it sit and stabilize - no improvement yet. Maybe I just need a new compressor but this one makes no noise. The question: what affects voltage to the compressor clutch? Pressure switch, Ranco switch? What else? But since the compressor did engage and turn when I jumped 12V to it maybe I have 2 problems?
Any ideas from you friendly Auto AC gurus?
Thanks,
Peter
