Joe, Coincidence or what? My '98 just turned 77K. Anyway, went in behind the rear panel this weekend to take a look. I haven't seen this before on any of the other Saabs I've owned, but assumed it was either (1) a loose actuator, or (2) one or more of the springs inside the actuator is shot. A loose one would be fairly simple to fix - just tighten it or the loose linkage down. The actuator has some internal springs, one of those breaking could cause the solenoid to thump alarmingly. That would be more of an asthetic issue. Anyway, everything was tight on mine, so I unplugged it to eliminate the annoying noise for now. There is no lube involved, the response on the bulletin board from another owner isn't correct. Cost out hurts though, $140 list (discounted from dealer on net for $100 shipped new part), Goldwing used part is $50 shipped. I'm checking my local yards for a wreck in Connecticut. The actuator p/n 43 04 911 is good for 1994-98 9000s. Hope this helps.
