the mast is held in place within the barrel of the assembly by a small metal sleeve that has tangs on it that press against the assembly. This sleeve not only keeps the antenna from extending beyond the top of the assembly (not allowing it to pop out), it also serves to ground it by the tangs contacting the assembly which is itself grounded.
The usual way to get the mast out is to pull from underneath. You have to remove the whole assembly from the car as a unit (I had to remove the whole assembly bracket as well), disconnect the electrical stuff, then pull the barrel off the assembly by unscrewing the 2 small screws that hold it in place to the motor housing. Then, you can pull the antenna out of the motor housing.
I did this about a year ago, and that was the only way I was able to get the antenna out. I've also done this with other cars, and I'm sure you can't pull the antenna out from the top; it has to be pulled from inside the car by first removing the unit as a whole.
