out by hot combution gas through the sump to oil filler cap: The only way to induce such a leak is past piston rings: Therefore bad piston ring. To catch all damages a "cylinder leakdown test" maybe required as suggested by Eric Law.
Compressed air is applied to the cylinder (via a spark-plug-hole adapter) thru a small orifice. The pressure drop across the orifice indicates how much air is leaking out of the cylinder.
Beauty of this is you can usually hear or see where it's leaking from. Hissing in the intake or exhaust indicates leaking valves. Hissing in the crankcase (listen at the oil filler cap) indicates problems with piston rings. Bubbles in coolant reservoir indicate leaking head gasket or a crack in the head.
Now is this a standard test ?
