Conor, I would certainly recommend getting the relay. I got one for an '87 Ford T'bird. This will take the load off the ignition switch and make it last much longer. Unforutunately most European automakers use switches for their loads instead of using relays to drive things. If you take a look at the headlight switching arrangement even though there is a relay it is simply supplying power to the turn signal switch for final routing to the low/high beams.
