If indeed it does then changing the head alone will only generate a marginal difference since the amplifier output would not change, but the input voltage would. Thus giving your amp a cleaner signal to work with the system would 'seem' louder, because the output signal can now get to a higher level before distortion or clipping occurs. The actual output voltage of the amp would not change.
Now on to the other half...If you have a system with a head that has built in amplification then a simple head swap will increase both volume and clarity. The majority of aftermarket decks have an output between 50-55 watts per channell, considerable more than the 12-15 watts of a factory deck from that period (without outboard amp).
As far as wiring up a new amp and head... no sweat a trained monkey could do it (I employ several in my shop!). And your cost should be minimal, a good head and 4 channel amp (on the budget side) should not run you more that $400. (at least in my store) Prices will change depending on your market. Shop around, try the big guys (short-circuit city, worst buy, ect..) but don't forget about the small indy's, we generally have better pricing than the 'big guys' and we won't try to sell you a washer-dryer set afterwards! One final thing... if you are in the least bit mechanically inclined, and can read and follow instructions, then do the install yourself. (unless you can get a killer deal on one!)
