I think his $1,200 is about right for parts and labor together, $800 just in labor alone. DIY is the better way to go though cause you don't really need any special tools, just the bit for the head bolts and a good trq wrench. Figure about 12 hr for the job and about $250-$400 for parts depending on how much you want to replace while your in there. Some say do the timing chain the same time, figure $100 for that. However you can do the chain at a later date after the head gasket like I did.
My advice is to DIY if you have the time, and don't need the car fixed like overnight or whatever but can work little by little over a 4 to 5 days to complete the job. I did mine over a weekend (SAT-SUN), it was alot of work for 2 days but I saved a bunch of money! Search here for info, read up and get smart about the process. Going over the steps in your mind over and over will make it easier when you actually do the work. There's plenty info on head gasket DIY if this is what you need.
