The coupler may be shot, but it can also become loose. On my 96 the tapered pin/bolt had worked loose and let the coupler wiggle on the shaft. Reverse was hard to find. Tightened it up and all is well. Get a Haynes manual and read it for some more details. Also see Quasi and Townsend sites.
