It sounds like the rub marks on Joe's '98 are from turning the wheels to the lock posisition, like when entering a parking spot, or doing a U-turn on a tight street. I'm only speculating, but rub marks at "9 o'clock" lead me to believe that they occur at "full lock" If this is the case, then the rubbing only occurs at very low speeds (unless you can pull off a full-lock at freeway speeds...then you have bigger issues to worry about than tire wear!)...thereby causing little to no wear or damage on the tires.
My borther had a similar situation on his '97 900SET. The tires wore a little of the plastic wheel well shrouding away until it no longer rubbed.
