I've occasionally probed signals at the ECU with a scope. Basically remove the false bulkhead top, pull out the ECU and then reattach the ground strap, which makes a great place to ground the scope.

I have the factory wiring diagram, if you need the crank sensor pin numbers.

I have a different method for testing DI cassettes: have a known good spare around, preferably in the trunk, along with the tools to make the swap.

A friend of mine with a 9-3 had his anniversary weekend ruined by a a DI cassette that failed 150 miles from home. Long expensive tow, $650 at a dealer. He now believes.

DI cassettes also provide the knock sensing function for trionic based 9000s. You can test them for spark as the article outlined, but testing the knock sensing function is more difficult. I have a DI cassette that starts and runs fine, but the car runs really ratty with this DI cassette installed.

Finally, crank sensors rarely go bad. Wish the same could be said for DI cassettes.
