1) Raise car up just enough to squeeze your body under it (can leave the tires on the ground).
2) Use a 13mm socket on oil drain plug (watch the washer behind it).
3) LEFTY-LOOSEY, RIGHTY-TIGHTY (don't screw this up!).
4) Drain oil into suitable container (approx. 4 - 5 quarts will drain).
5) When oil has stopped draining, put drain plug back in. Can re-use the bronze washer, but over time, it will need to be replaced.
6) Move drip container under oil filter which is on pass. side towards front of engine.
7) Use oil filter wrench (whichever type you want: strap, cap, chain, etc.) and twist the filter off (pay attention to # 3 above!).
8) Drain oil out of filter into container.
9) Coat new filter gasket with fresh oil.
10) Wipe old oil off the mating surface where filter is to be screwed on.
11) Screw on new filter until gasket contacts the mating surface.
12) Hand-tighten 3/4 of a turn more (any more and it will be difficult to remove the next time). Might need to use wrench to complete this.
13) Remove dipstick, wipe it down, and pour fresh oil into the opening.
14) Add about 4 quarts, then check the level with the dipstick.
15) Ensure oil level is at MAX, then start engine and let run for 5 minutes.
16) Turn off engine, clean up any mess, and dispose/save the old oil accordingly (recycling it is the correct way).
17) Check oil level again after engine has cooled down. Add enough to bring it to MAX.
I will not go into what oil to use (synth vs fossil), what weight to use (10w-30 vs something else), or what filter to use (Saab vs something else). Do a search on the archives for these recommendations as there are close to a million posts on them! But I will tell you the better the filter, the more it filters the oil (I see cases of Saab Long-Life ones on eBay all the time for cheap which is where I purchased mine).
Good luck!
