I recently bought another '87 9000 Turbo and made the mistake of taking too long to register (no comments please) it so I had to get another smog test (which it had passed previously). Anyway, it failed the test.
Now, before I went through this process I did replace a couple of parts, from another '87 I still have, to get this car running better. It was getting in the high teens for gas mileage, according to the computer, was sluggish at best at low speed, and had a poor cold idle. What I replaced was the AMM, plugs, and wires. It runs like a top now and gets a minimum 25 mpg with 31+ on the highway - at an average speed of 75.
What I've done to this point is look at the O2 sensor output and it was fluctuating between near 0 to 1 volt. I also measured the AMM resistance on the one I removed, it is 313 ohms, and adjusted the current one to it (from about 420 ohms). I also replaced the O2 sensor with the one off my other car as it is pretty new. The sensor output is now between about .2 vdc and .8 vdc.
I haven't had it retested yet, as I'm going to see if the station will put it on the machine to see if it looks like it will pass. The test results were as follows:
Speed HC reading/max CO%reading/max NO reading/max
15 mph 144/114 .53/.73 1843/785
25 mph 59/88 .14/.61 716/724
Previous test results
15 mph 12/114 .01/.73 463/785
25 mph 6/88 .00/.61 86/724
The previous owner already had the cat replaced. Any suggestions of what else I should look for are appreciated. Thanks
Tom R.
