My 91 9k is in 100 pieces right now for the exact same thing. I also pulled the oil pan down to clean out the pan and the oil pickup screen. It is only 2 more steps from where you will be. Remove the rearward hydrolic motormount from the mount and the 4 bolts from the engine. This allows access to the rear line of bolts. Doing this will also allow you to remove the timing chain tensioner and inspect the amount of chain, sproket, and guide wear. Mine was at 18mm extended. Service length is 12mm, max is 20mm.
It is hard to visually look at the chain for wear, as it wears only slighty. The combo of the chain, sprokets, and guides turns into a lot. I just fitted my new stuff, and the tensioner went out maybe 2-3mm or so.
HIGHLY recomend doing the chain, guides, and at least lower sprokets while in there...Then your good for another 200,000km/miles whatever you prefer ;-)
