and apparently a Bugbear is a kind of hob-goblin dreamed up to frighten children. Sounds a bit limp so I'll take a look at Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, they might have made up something more interesting.
I think of the "transmission" as being the whole deal from engine to wheels - call it the drive train if you like - with the gearbox as one element, but have no idea if that's right.
Even further off topic, when my mother produced my eldest brother (around 1934) my father gave her a Type 46 Bugatti (a kind of mini Royale) with the gearbox in unit with the back axle. When it was cold you apparently had to use two hands to change gear. She would have preferred diamonds.
We often call them "trucks" over here too, as well as "lorries" and sometimes "heavies" or "juggernauts". Lorry is a 19th century word so our two versions of English probably parted company before there were any motorised ones in existence.
