How flexible is that flex pipe, anyway?

JB Weld temporary repair of flex pipe failed on my '91 CDT (flex pipe integrated into downpipe). All motor mounts (top and bottom plus autobox) have been replaced within last 500 miles.
I would really rather spend my next SAAB priority dollars on rebuilding the front end suspension and replacing the axles (both outer CVs clicking), then invest in a 3" downpipe.
My questions are these:
1. Can a short-term straight pipe solution work with U-clamps since all mounts have been recently replaced?
2. Should I clamp on a universal flex pipe?
3. What's up with my local repair shops? I've seen other posts about having a shop weld in a universal flex pipe, but one shop owner I spoke to said magnesium welds don't hold up (apparently the flex pipes are made of magnesium). I called three Midas shops: one wanted no part of it and the other two wanted me to 'bring it in for a look', sounding suspiciously like they wanted to bait and switch me for a full replacement.
Everything else is sound on the exhaust side end to end. The previous owner just let the mounts fail, causing the problem with the flex-pipe.
Any advice or experience is welcome.
