There is a cupholder that you can get to put in the empty slot. Some people don't like them, and you have to makes sure that it doesn't interfere with your shifter. I have one in both our SAABs--it works pretty good for us. We got them off Ebay--search the site for SAAB cupholder, they're on there all the time.
In a manual car, it MUST be located below the ACC unit. In an automatic, maybe one space lower. Otherwise, they interfere when you shift. In both, I threw out the ashtray (since we don't smoke), and relocated my cigarette lighters to a blank square next to my cabin fan. It took some "convincing", but it looks pretty stock.
Another cupholder possibility is something that fits into the space behind the e-brake. Again, found on Ebay for usually around $50.
You could also just get a cubbyhole insert to fit in the slot--it's a bit smaller than a CD, but handy for your wallet, cell phone, whatever.
Whatever you do, have fun with it! I really enjoyed modifying our SAABs to meet our needs--and I only did the second one because my wife saw mine and said, "Can you do that in my car?"
