If you have done any searching of this bulletin board on this subject, you will quickly realize that this is something you are not going to be able to do yourself. The hose that usually goes is the one on the compressor, actually two hoses connected to a dual pad mount. This hose is about $125-$200 depending on where you get it. You can run into trouble removing the hose from the condenser and might have to cut the fitting off, which can be dicey if you are not comfortable with a cut-off wheel. The whole system should be flushed and the receiver/dryer ($50) should be replaced. If you need the other hose, from the condenser to the reciver/dryer that's another $100-$150. The oil has to be changed in the compressor for the new refrigerant (R-134a). The fittings have to be changed and the system evacuated using a vacuum pump. Then the system has to have the new refrigerant introduced and the system tested for leaks.
I don't think $500 is outrageous for this job. You are lucky that you don't need a new compressor. That is always a possibility when you buy a car that has faulty air conditioning system. A compressor would have added $700 to the price of the job, and made you really unhappy.
