Startling starter weirdness

My 88 9000T has been fantastic since I got it a few months ago. I do all the work and it's a well-maintained car.
On a hot day here in Denver Tuesday I was driving in traffic and later pulled into a parking space. I thought I felt and heard a weird vibration. After I turned off the car and got out with the key in my hand I realized the starter was turning. Bizarre. Sort of cycling. Finally it stopped. Obviously, some sort of internal fault caused by heat (and that it has 159k miles.) It has not happened since. I have never seen such a thing and I've worked on a lot of cars. Has anyone had this happen? Could there be arcing (short) between the Batt + terminal on the starter and the solenoid wire from the ignition switch?
