Why they stopped making them...

Honestly, Saab of the '70s, '80s, and '90s was fairly unique in the auto industry by keeping models unchanged for so long:
The C900 (which wasn't even a complete ground up redesign of the old 99) ran for, what, 14 years with only one relatively minor aesthetic change and no serious mechanical changes.
The 9000 ran for 12 years with just one major restyle (still keeping the basic platform, some sheetmetal, and most of the interior) and one significant engine change (Trionic).
The NG900/9-3 ran for 9 years with little more than a name change and revisons to correct original design flaws.
If anything, I'm more surprised that they lasted as long as they did.
As far as the looks of the 93+ 9000 go, it's a matter of taste. I used to dislike all the 9000s, but after driving the Aero I came around. I still think the old 9000 looks too Italian (it *was* designed by an Italian), but I do think early '90s ones look pretty sharp in bright red.
