The first thing that came to my mind, and apparently Darren's is that the wire connecting to the block temp sensor has come off the sensor. With that wire dangling in the air, the temp gauge will resolutely stay on the bottom peg. Not sure which year/modely you have, but usually if you look just forward of the thermostat housing, on the side of the engine block facing the left fender (sitting in the seat looking left), the sensor 'connector' is just a metal disk on a pin. The wire has a slip-on connector, that probably slipped off.
