Clutch Sticking Problem - Caused by Firewall Flex?

I've had an intermittent problem with the clutch pedal on my 96 9000 not fully returning to the full up position. Through the life of the car I've had the slave and master cylinders replaced, as well as several of the hoses. A new clutch was installed last year but the problem persists.
I've recently heard that the firewall tends to crack where the master cylinder is mounted, which causes the firewall to flex and the pedal to stick. I've seen reference to a fix for this involving welding a plate to the firewall, but no specifics on how this is done.
Has anyone had something like this done? Any instructions available?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
