JT exhaust/cat. installation question

Well this weekend I finally got round to installing my 3" JT exhaust system (on my 95 9kCSE) that has been lying in my garage for a couple of months. I couldn't finish it off, however, because I couldn't get a good fit between the cat and the downpipe (the cat was supplied by Engstrom with the system).

The downpipe fits very loosely into the cat and there is a combination hanger/clamp that is supposed to clamp it in place. I put a bolt in there and tightened the band up as far as it would go (i.e. the nut was all the way up to the head of the bolt), but the downpipe still flops around inside the cat. I looked at Red Aero's pics of his system and the clamp/hanger there has two bolts - one on each side - mine only has one, so it seems like a design change (flaw?). I will try adding a regular 3" U-clamp tonight, but has anybody else had the same problem? I am concerned with how loose the fit is between the cat and the rest of the system - I really can't imagine getting a good seal here. Anybody have any thoughts on the advisability of cutting two slits down the cat pipe (like on all exhaust pipe connections) to help the cat clamp to the exhaust?
