Banging on the CV joint isn't a great idea and, if the splines have rusted to the hub, almost always a waste of time. Inevitably, out of frustration, the wooden block will be abandoned in favor of steel to steel contact.
The best thing to do is to go to a rental shop and rent a screw type hub puller. OTC makes the one I have. It bolts to the hub using the wheel mounting bolts. Then a center scrtew pushes out the drive shaft through the hub. It adds to the expense of the job, but is well worth it in the long run.
