My 91 9kt would pop out of first as I was releasing the clutch to get underway. Most suspected that the shift fork was at fault, but after the rebuild, it was the carrier bearing for the output shaft the was clearly the culprit. After 140k, the bearings were worn so small that they were barely retained by their race. The tech who rebuilt it said that this problem caused too much movement internally and resulted in poor/incomplete engagement into first gear.
From what I understand, when the tranny is able to take off, but pops out of gear AFTER the car is underway, the synchros are typically at fault. Good luck!
