drains at back of hatch door

This morning I opened up my trunk and about a cup of water came pouring out of the drains at the base of the hatch. This must have been very amusing to watch as all this water went down my sleeve and in my face and down the front of my jacket. Not only was I not amused at getting soaked by ice-cold snowmelt at 7:20am, but I'm also wondering where all this water came from.
The car is parked nose up a very slight incline and it was covered with snow for a couple of days. My assumption is that the snow had something to do with the water but I can't figure out where it got in and whether it's a catastrophe or not. Is this normal? Is the water getting in those slits alongside the rear windshield, and is it supposed to? Is the hatch now rusting from the inside out?
