Very sorry to hear of your trouble. Saab ONLY recommends the NGK BCPR7-ES for your engine, because the Trionic system is "tuned" to these. NGK platinums are reported to lead to plug foulding that is hard to clear. Some people have experimented with the NGK platinums and the concensus seems to be that the 6- heat range seems to work better in their platinums than the 7s. Maybe a cold Platinum plug was the cause of your misfire.
However, would be very surprised to hear that this plug failure would lead to rod breakage - sounds very unlucky to me. Others may well know much more or have direct experience. You might like to check on the Performance board too. Having said all that, I'm sure the Bosch plugs should not have broken and I suppose your first call should be to the shop that sold them to you.
