If you smell the coolant coming from the vents with the heat on, then it is most likely the heater core. That is the classic fault of this part, and you're lucky that you've gone 12 years with the original.
The radiator is indeed that radiator looking thing at the front of the car, right behind the grill. Most cars these days DON'T have a fill cap on the radiator - instead, there is an expansion tank mounted on the right front wheel well, and that has a cap. You fill that tank (to the marks indicated), and it is connected into the system.
