bigger one that I think came along in the early to mid '70s. (Those drive the same as th big sedans)
Check in Hemmings or someplace, but that SL may be worth a fair bit more than $9500. I've seen those go for high teens. The rebuilt engine & trans are not a bad thing and the older SLs are nice cars. I wouldn't want one as my daily driver, but as a "nice weather" car for you and your bride (who is obviously the one who wants that car) they are nice. There are 3 or 4 hereabouts and they are sweet.
What I would do:
If the SL is the more classic small body and is a good car, get it and have it as your fair weather car. If it is the bigger one, I'd avoid it, but that's me. They are still very nice.
Take your Saab to an indy who knows Saabs and get the DI dealt with. It's only a pain becuz you haven't found the answer. A Saab indy will be able to fix it. Dump the worst of the two 9Ks. I'd tend to keep the hatch as it is better for those Home Depot trips.
Enjoy having a Saab and a classic Merc.
Just my .02.
