Can I use 0W-40 100% synthetics oil in Winter?

Hi guys,
I used the Mobil1 0W-40 for my '98 CSE in Summer time. Last October I swithed to Mobil1 5W-30 (Newer Vehicle Formular) to prepare for a mild Winter time here in Raleigh, NC. Since I switched to the 5W-30 I obsearved a tiny leak down around the oil pan area that I'd never found one before (wonder if the using the 'newer car' formular to 'not a new car' made this =P )....
Anyway, I plan to change the oil again before new year. As I always travel on the highway, having use more midrange rev. than just normal city driving + found that leaks, I'm thinking about switching back to 0W-40. Any advice or objection regarding using the 40 viscosity oil in Winter time ? I think it would be nicer to use the 40 oil if I travel in highway more than in city... Any thought would be greatly appreciated!
