You can get the fuel line on at room temperature if you are careful. I had the same problem happen to me. I lowered the fuel tank enough to pull the line out of the car from underneath the car. (I tied a wire onto the line to pull it back through when I was done.) If you cut only the cracked part of the line off and leave a little bit of the flared end, the line is much easier to get on. If you must heat the line, use a pot of boiling water rather than a heat gun because the plastic melts quickly once it reaches the right temperature.
