First, keep your cool. Serpentine belt repair is not diffcult or expensive. The minimum - a torn belt. Cost About $30, DIY job or about 1/2 labour at a garage. At maximum - one or both pulleys gone, about $25 each. (The belt tensioner shock is about $100 but is very unlikely to fail).
You can drive the one mile on the battery alone (I drove about 5 miles with no problem) however you could cause more damage if, for example, the belt wrapped itself around the crank pulley and the tensioner or something else, then something can break. If you can pull the serpentine belt out of the car, then it would be ok to drive the one mile.
If your'e in doubt about driving, can you not leave the car overnight in the parking lot and take a cab home? Return in the morning so you can see better. Maybe bring with you a new belt and some tools. You can fix it on the spot. All you need is 13mm sockets or wrenches and a long 19mm wrench or socket with long breaker bar.
If you want to do it yourself and need help, I can guide you by phone, no problem. Just email back.
