I have lived in northern Vermont for many years and for what its worth, I run studded Hakkas on all four corners of both SAABs (95 9000CS and 95 900S) and my two wheel drive truck. I ALWAYS get to work and back again and I never worry about my wife doing the same. Tires are the only contact you have with the road and if you are going to be driving on ice and snow you will never regret getting studs. These cars (SAABs) are pretty much un-stopable with good studded tires. I feel like I'm in a tractor. I know its expensive, but you are dealing with your life, or at least your good health, and the life of your loved ones here. If you can possibly afford it, do it. And do it on all four wheels. You'll love it! And don't forget they last several years as you are only running them in the winter.
