Yay!! I got underneath my new-to-me 1997 9000 CSE w/140k miles (after properly jacking and securing the car) and tried to open the connector to the speed sensor (which comes out of the top of the transmission near the firewall) to inspect the connector plug for dirt and or corrosion. I tried with the left hand, I tried with the right hand, but I couldn't get the connector to come apart (of course I could only fit one hand up through the bottom of the engine compartment!). It looked like some of the plastic housing had broken off, allowing moisture and dirt to disrupt the connection. Well, after about 20 minutes of one-handed pressing, pulling, and squeezing I gave up. However, when I test drove it, it was working fine! The slight back and forth motion must have cleaned the metal-on-metal contact.
Symptoms were intermittent speedometer (which of course affected the cruise control, trip computer, check engine light etc.). Speedo would come on after warm up only when the external temp was above freezing. It might have also come on after hitting a bump (but not always), and the needle would fall from 15 mph to zero-all signs to me that this was an electrical and most likely a connector-related problem. (Check engine light resolved shortly afterwards, indicating that it may have been related to the average MPG? Anyone know for sure?)
Who knows, I may still end up having to replace the connector or the speed sensor (or perhaps the internal gear inside the transmission). For now, however (it is Christmas Eve!) I am extremely pleased to have solved this little problem. Thanks for all the previous posts which helped me figure this one out.
