The Trionic engine control system in your car uses the spark plugs for two critical items. The DI does more than just fire a spark - it uses the spark plug as a sensor for conditions inside the cylinder.
The first use is to determine timing - There is a crank position sensor, but that won't tell which of two cylinders is at TDC. The signal from the spark plug to the DI tells the engine which cylinder is firing.
The second is to detect pre-ignition. Think of it as a 'pre-knock' knock sensor. The Trionic will adjust timing on a cylinder by cylinder basis, and adjust boost, as necessary.
For that reason, stick with the exact NGKs specified in the manual, gapped exactly per the manual. Yes, I know that there are cross-references that say that a given spark plug will work. As you've found out, that's not strictly true.
