1994 9000CSE, 195Kmiles. sounded like a bad pre-ignition problem, knocking, probably due to dieing DI cassette. Started getting louder, almost like rattling. Because of the noise, I started to think I might have a bad pulley too. On my way to work when rattling, knocking started getting very loud and I started getting worried. I was idling in traffic, then a loud rattle, knock, thwack, and dead. Wouldn't crank, battery was flat. Had it towed home.
At home I put in a better, but still old DI cassette, then jumped it to get it up my driveway. It cranked up fine, didn't seem to knock much, but has a horrible thwack, thwack, thwack sound with every revolution (or maybe every ignition in one cylinder).
I thought I might have cracked a plug, but I pulled the plugs and they all seemed ok. Although, the thwacking cylinder plug looked like it was running hot.
Problems: low battery and thwacking cylinder. I think these are two separate issues.
The sepentine belt was ok, but didn't seem very tight, made me think the tensionier may need replacement. With the colder winter weather the belt may be slipping on the alternator, causing the low battery, although I didn't hear any squealing.
Ideas on the twacking? Bent valve stem? chipped cam shaft? cracked valve? not clear to me whether anything deeper in the engine could have busted (some sort of busted bearing on the connecting rod?). I haven't pulled the valve cover, but probably will this weekend.
I would be happy to hear your ideas, or similar experiences.
Thanks.
