Final Drive Lube and ATF leak

I just bought a 1996 9kcs and it has a slow oil leak out of the bottom of the final drive. I tightened the bolts holding the two halves together but could someone please tell me how to check and ensure the lube level is proper and what kind of lube I should top it up with?
I also would like advice on the slow ATF leak that drips from between the engine and transmission where they are joined. What does that indicate? How serious is it? What can I do about it?
Thanks for any advice,
Bob
