The thermostat housing is uphill from the heater hose connection, might be the source of the fluid. This gasket was leaking slightly on my car when I bought it, had the same olfactory effect as yours (the antifreeze gets vaporized on the hot cylinder head, fumes get drawn into the A/C system). As long as you are replacing the hose you may want to do the thermostat as well, clean up the mounting surfaces and install it with some lubricant to ensure it seats properly - I used "Sylglide".
