mine were quite sooty, as was the tailpipe until I replaced that valve.
As TKC mentioned, try 1.0 mm first. That is where my car likes the gap. Less, and I get misfire at idle. More, and I lose top-end performance.
You should still replace that valve and then go for a run. Plugging the end is not exactly the same thing as allowing pressurized vapor to flow into the intake manifold (meaning, having everything hooked up and working correctly). It is approx. $25 at the dealer, $13 at a site sponsor.
Note: there is a newer version of that valve. It is all white (vs. grey and white), bigger (stack of nickels vs. dimes), and made of a better plastic (will not become brittle with age). Some of the site sponsors only carry the old style, whereas the dealer only stocks the newer style.
I would also replace the small tubing that that valve is a part of. I'm sure it's passed its prime and could be leaking via pin-sized holes.
You may also want to do an adaptation run after replacing those parts. The ECU is probably set to run at a richer-level, and doing this will speed up the adaptation process. Just pull the fuse marked Engine Controls (or something like that...not the one for Engine Diagnostics which is for the OBD connector under the steering wheel). It must be left out for a few hours (that's how long it takes to de-energize the ECU circuitry and erase the memory). Then replace the fuse and drive quite spiritedly. I don't know the exact rpm's needed to stay at while driving with a stick (for an auto it's 2700 - 3250 for 5 seconds at close to full boost as possible--nice to have a steep, long hill to do this on).
