There is no recommended replacement interval for the timing chain. Properly maintained, it should last the life of the car, or at least well into the 200K mile range. That doesn't say that some wouldn't wear out sooner. Keeping the oil level near Max, and frequent oil changes help. But that's true of all the oil-washed components.
How to tell if it needs replacement? Most folks start to notice noise from the belt side of the engine, where the chain is. One has to be careful - there are a lot of things in that area that can make noise that aren't the timing chain. If I suspect a timing chain, I remove the valve cover and visually inspect the chain for wear. You can also check the alignment of the cams to marks on the bearing blocks, which indicate chain wear. Since valve cover gaskets usually start leaking oil after about 5-8 years, it's a 'two-for-one.' It's a minimal amount of work to pull and replace the valve cover, and the cost is small for a new gasket you probably need anyway.
If the timing chain is worn, then chances are the stuff it runs on (sprockets) and rubs on (guides) also need replacement.
