...the main thrust of your argument still stands, that being that the question of which car the folks should drive comes down to more considerations than that of safety ratings of the respective cars. I would tend to side with the argument that the Subaru might still work better for the parents than the more complicated Saab.

As to the safety question, the differences between Saabs and Subarus are not so clearcut today as they were in 1992. I would not feel at risk per se in a Subaru of modern vintage. I very definitely would in a 1992 vintage, with good and well-documented reason.

I wish I could remember the survey (where it was printed, what year it was done), but it compared the number of fatalities by model for all manufacturers in a given year. This particular year, for the 9000, there were NONE. ZERO. No other car has ever achieved this.
