All the home-made caps I've seen are off junkers. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't have to be another Saab 9000, but I hope someone else will chime in.
The nice setup I borrow has a cap with a hole in it (from a junkyard) with a quick-release air fitting stuck in the top, gooped with RTV caulk. My buddy has a build-up he did from air hose parts at the hardware store - a fitting for a pressure gauge, and a fitting off to a pump. For a pump, he uses an old pump garden sprayer. Fill the reservoir, Pump it up to about 12 psi on the gauge, bleed away. The quick release allows you to drop the pressure easily.
As to clogged passages - they usually clog right at the bleeder nipple. Quite often a paper clip helps clean out the gunk. If it still refuses to bleed, then you can always rebuild the caliper yourself. Personally, I simply get a rebuilt caliper and slap it one when the old one is off. A mildy corroded caliper is an easy rebuild; a badly corroded one is a nightmare. But if you go to rebuild it and it's crudded up beyond all hope, you can always use it for the core of 'new' rebuilt and you're only out the cost of a rebuild kit - cheap.
