white smoke, rough idle...

From what I learned searching previous posts, I might have a real problem on my hands...at 127K, perhaps my head gasket has outlived its usefulness. As I mentally prepare myself to fling yet more money at my car, I have come up with what is probably a stupid question. But where better to ask than here.
These problems are brand new. (I get weird smelling and plentiful white exhaust in the morning, and though driving feels perfectly fine and I haven't been stalling, I also have a rough, stumbling, scary-sounding idle.) About two weeks ago I had that run-in with the pothole, which destroyed one of my front wheels and damaged a piece of underside trim. Is it possible that the pothole did further damage that might have contributed to what I now face, since everything used to work just fine?
I hit the pothole while on the way to meet a friend for ice cream; I'm not eligible for reimbursement from the town because it was a state road (where you can get reimbursed for injuries but not property damage). The wheel was $200, making that the most expensive scoop of sorbet I've ever eaten. If I need a new head gasket, then I think it will become the most expensive scoop of sorbet in history.
BTW I believe that plugs and DI only have about 5K miles on them, although I don't know that they have been checked recently for fouling or wear.
