He quoted me "around a thousand" for the head gasket job, which was a bit higher than the $800-$900 I'd seen someone else post previously, but then again, I don't know where that guy lived and I'm used to paying more for everything around here! Al at ABJ had also cautioned that it depends on what they find inside the engine: if the head needs to be remachined or if you need a valve job, that changes things. But I also told them to fix whatever else was broken, and of course once they got in there they found plenty of stuff to keep them busy.

Fortunately the head and valves were fine. The coolant temp sensor was dead, which is why I didn't know that I was losing coolant into the engine. It was also apparent that it was time to replace the belt and pulley/tensioner setup, which was another chunk of change, and there were a few hoses, gaskets, and light bulbs that also needed attention. Total time in the shop was three days, total charge was $1477. Needless to say, it's like having a whole new car (I guess, I don't know...I've never driven a "new" car.) By the way it's at 127K miles.

SilverAeroGuy offered me a ride to work and I was like Are you CRAZY? I just spent fifteen hundred dollars getting that thing rolling again. You can rest assured that I intend to DRIVE IT, not leave it parked in the street. :)
