Back-up Fuel Pump?

I've been watching the fuel pump postings lately. My '92 9000s is at about 250,000 miles now. It had a fuel pump at about 150,000. I've heard people say they tend to go about 120,000. I've also heard people say they may go forever. I've been trying to decide whether to change it prophylacticly, but I've been told this one may outlast the one I replace it with. I hate needing a tow truck. What about a back-up. On my MG I had installed a little universal pump in line, with a switch. Not if, but when the SU pump failed, a flick of the switch would keep the car going untill the main pump was changed. Any thoughts or comments?
